Collection of plastic PET bottles under the 7th edition of the "Tree for a bottle"® programme in Brzeg Dolny ended with a grand finale on April 29, 2009. PCC Rokita S.A. was the regional coordinator of the initiative. Again, this ecological education project gathered a number of school and kindergarten pupils.
This year’s edition of the "Tree for a bottle"® took place in 9 towns being home to 13 companies - participants in the "Responsible Care"® programme and in Konin, where the project was co-ordinated by the District Authorities. In Brzeg Dolny and the neighbourhood, children from 5 elementary schools and 3 kindergartens collected a total of 118,768 bottles, which enabled the planting of 192 tree and bush seedlings. The collected bottles were taken away to be utilised by the Alumex company.
The grand finale in Brzeg Dolny abounded with numerous attractions. Children from kindergarten No. 1 staged an interesting artistic programme, the most active participants were rewarded with souvenirs and the best-performing class received a prize in the form of an excursion funded by the Mayor of Brzeg Dolny.
The winners in the competition were pupils representing the Elementary School from Godzięcin who gathered 29,829 empty PET bottles. It is worth noting that this is over 16,000 more than collected by the last year’s winners.
"Year by year, the project enjoys more and more popularity among our pupils. Thanks to the involvement of the children, their families and tutors, we have succeeded in collecting enough bottles to win over other schools in the region. Our children showed a great commitment to collecting PET bottles. Thanks to the earlier multimedia presentation made by the regional co-ordinator i.e. PCC Rokita S.A., they got to know the ins and outs of the ecology." - says Agnieszka Zgierska, teacher of 5 & 6-year old pupils from Elementary School in Godzięcin.
The initiative "Tree for a bottle"® was started in 2003 by the companies associated within an international chemical sector programme known as "Responsible Care"® and it aims at encouraging children to collect empty PET bottles. In return, they receive tree and bush seedlings which are then planted in the neighbourhood. The project's objective is to stimulate local communities to take care of the environment and to build a positive image of the companies participating in the Responsible Care® programme by promoting ecologically-friendly activities and philosophy. The patronage by the Minister of Environment and the Minister of Education are the best evidence of the high recognition for the initiative. On the other hand, innovative solutions implemented every year testify to the continuous improvement of the organizers. This year’s novelties were the presentations of the ideas laying behind the Initiative and several competitions for children - for the most interesting poster related to the initiative, for drafting a "Preschooler’s ecological vocabulary" and the "School ecological lexicon".
